Polish weather conditions Wind resources

Weather conditions have a significant impact on the growth of the clean energy sector—that is a fact. Just as the amount of sunlight determines the efficiency of photovoltaic panels, wind speed and stability determine the location, number, and placement of wind turbines. At the same time, modern technologies allow for increasingly better adaptation to natural conditions, enabling the effective use of wind potential for energy production.

Wind conditions vary across Poland, which means that energy sources are geographically dispersed. The seasons also play a significant role—the average wind speed in summer is approximately 2.8 m/s, while in winter it rises to 3.8 m/s. These figures place Poland high in Europe in terms of available wind resources, which are conducive to the development of wind energy.

Thanks to technological advances, modern turbines can operate efficiently even in less favorable conditions. They begin generating power at lower wind speeds, which increases the number of potential sites for wind farms. This makes it possible to harness renewable energy resources
while respecting the natural environment.

“Modernwind turbines begin operating at an average wind speed of about 3.5 m/s, but they achieve maximum efficiency at speeds of 10–12 m/s. Contrary to appearances, stronger winds do not mean increased energy production—once a certain level is reached, the turbines generate a constant amount of energy. Additionally, for safety reasons, they are equipped with safety systems and shut down during very strong gusts exceeding 20–25 m/s .”

Technology in the Face of Change

Modern wind turbines achieve a capacity factor of 35–40%, and sometimes even higher. By comparison, the first wind turbines achieved only about 20–26%. This significant improvement is due to technological advancements that enable energy production even under less stable conditions and at lower wind speeds. Modern solutions not only increase efficiency but also enhance the safety and durability of the equipment.

The Benefits of Wind Energy

Wind energy is a renewable and inexhaustible source of energy that can be used without limitation. Wind farms do not emit harmful substances during operation and do not cause environmental degradation. Furthermore, they contribute to enhancing the country’s energy security, can reduce energy costs, and offer the prospect of long-term savings.
