Where does the money go in your household? How to save even thousands of zlotys

Everyday habits have a real impact on the environment and household finances. In many households, losses resulting from food waste and inefficient energy use amount to several thousand zlotys a year. Meanwhile, reducing costs often doesn’t require major investments —small changes in how you use
your home and its resources are enough to achieve real savings.

What causes losses in the household budget?

In our daily lives, we rarely consider the impact that simple activities—such as using lights and appliances or going shopping—have on the environment and our budget. Meanwhile, households account for over 20 percent of energy consumption in Poland. The scale of waste is also evident when it comes to food. It is estimated that a single household can lose as much as 3,000 PLN a year on food that is thrown away.

Interestingly, one of the key areas—or, more specifically, rooms in our home—that contributes to rising utility bills is the kitchen, where both energy consumption and food waste are concentrated. And which appliances generate these losses? It’s the refrigerator, because it runs continuously all year round. The situation is similar with devices left in standby mode. Televisions, chargers, and other electronics consume energy even when not in use. It’s worth remembering, however, that some of this excessive energy consumption stems from small, repetitive actions that are easy to overlook. This is also the case with how we use an electric kettle. Running it multiple times instead of boiling a larger amount of water at once can increase energy consumption by as much as 20–30 percent. On the other hand, replacing traditional incandescent bulbs with LED lighting can reduce energy consumption for lighting by as much as 75–80 percent.

What steps can I take to lower my bills?

Small changes in daily habits can yield tangible financial benefits. Education plays a key role in changing our approach to resource use—especially education that begins in our immediate surroundings. However, this does not mean giving up comfort, but rather paying closer attention to where we can reduce waste.
